Herrera, Williams earn top ratings
Robert E. Lee High School seniors Juan Herrera and Christopher Williams earned superior ratings for their architectural computer-aided drafting project at the SkillsUSA state competition in Corpus Christi on April 3 and 4.
Juan and Christopher are the students of Leia Miller.
Juan has been accepted to the engineering program at the University of Texas and will begin attending UT in the fall. Christopher has been accepted to the University of Houston, and he plans to pursue a career in architecture.
The students first entered their projects at the District 8 SkillsUSA competition on Feb. 29. After earning superior ratings at the contest, they advanced to the state level. The project consisted of a complete set of working drawings for a home that they designed. They were graded on the standards of the occupation as to quality, finish and neatness.
According to Miller, SkillsUSA teaches the importance of developing leadership skills, positive attitudes and pride in workmanship while preparing students for employment by introducing them to corporate quality culture. In addition, Texas SkkillsUSA emphasizes respect for the dignity of work, high standards in trade ethics, superior workmanship, quality and safety.
